Muscle Energy Techniques

Muscle Energy Techniques comprise a gentle form of joint manipulation used to restore healthy motion to “stuck” or dysfunctional joints.

How do Muscle Energy Techniques work?

Muscle Energy Techniques are a series of moderate manual therapy techniques that work through stretching and muscle contraction.

In order to improve range of motion, your affected joints will undergo movements that alternate between compression and relaxation states. By doing so we will work towards moving you past the restrictive barrier that is causing the dysfunction.

Muscle Energy Techniques derive their name from the concept of using your muscle energy. This means your own active participation, such as pushing against resistance, is required for maximum results.

Is MET treatment strenuous?

No, when administering METs no high velocity force is used at all.

Instead, Muscle Energy Techniques utilize your own contracting muscles against your RMT’s precise positioning to make corrections and restore motion to joints.

Which joints do METs help treat?

Muscle Energy Techniques can be used on any joint.

Most commonly, METs are applied to sacroiliac (SI) joints and joints in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine.

METs is not appropriate in some situations, including fractures, joint dislocations, and severe osteoporosis or whiplash injury.
